Custom Gift

One of the best things about DarionGlass that if an idea for an item is brewing, it can be adjusted, created, changed or discarded.

My college roommate recently retired from her full-time job and I thought that was worthy of a special gift. Shortly after I had this thought, the item to create came to me. I decided to make a mosaic tray that her husband could use to bring her breakfast in bed since she would no longer be a slave to an alarm clock.

Here is my finished version. My first pattern had flowers in the center as we both enjoy gardening. The flowers I had just did not fit the circle correctly, so I changed to creatures you find in a garden, a bird, butterfly and ladybug. I was creating this project organically, and rather out of order, and had the rest of the mosaic pattern already glued in place while I was still deciding on what the center would hold, so the space was clearly defined. I did some playing around with the parts in the center and decided on the finished version shown here.

Some of the colored mosaic pieces used in the tray were purchased, but I wanted a neutral background for the garden scene, so I made the ivory iridescent pieces used there and then fused them in the kiln to round off the sharp edges. Grouting the entire tray and sealing the grout finished off the project.

P.S. She loved the tray!
