Finishing Up

Last blog I talked about my mold and intended to make something with my new mold.  Well, the week got away from me and that didn’t happen.  So I will definitely have the mold results next week.  I am half way there, but I need one more trip through the kiln for a finished product.

This week I want to discuss finishes for stained glass items.  We are all familiar with the nice shiny silver finish and that may indeed be the standard.  However, there are other choices and the photo here shows those.  From left to right, the spiral suncatcher has the silver finish and silver chain, next to that is an Art Deco suncatcher that has a black finish and black chain, and next to that is a propagation panel with a copper finish and copper hanger.  The finish is chosen to complement the glass and the design and is much more obvious in person than in this photo.

Creating the different finishes means that the choice has to be made before the piece is assembled.  The foil that wraps the glass and makes it possible to solder the pieces together comes in silver, black and copper backed.  So both the correct foil and the applied patina added to the finished product must match.  These finishes allow for choices and variety for each individual product.

Stay tuned next week to see how my mold worked and what my last experiment of the month is!

We enjoy making items that represent special times or special people.  If you want a special item, contact us by emailing here or contact us on Facebook.
