Piece by Piece

DarionGlass does fused, mosaic and stained glass.  Sometimes we even combine two of these methods to create something unexpected.  That is the case with this peace sign.  It is a combination of mosaic and fused processes.  The mosaic demands placing small pieces of glass within the boundaries of the pattern.  The colors used are on the right, with each color in a separate cup and the pieces varied sizes which sometimes making placing them on a curve quite a challenge!  The colored glass is arranged on a clear base and once the pattern is complete, then the piece is carefully transferred to the kiln for fusing.  Unlike traditional mosaics, no grouting is needed and fusing allows for the colors to stand out.

As this piece awaits the kiln, it looks predominantly purple and blue in the photo.  However, it uses some striker glass – glass that is one color when you look at it, but it changes to a completely different color when heat is applied in the kiln.  Next week, I’ll show what this same piece looks like after firing in the kiln for about 16 hours.
