Cutting Glass
Cutting glass for a project is a rather straightforward process:
Create the pattern
Trace the pattern on the glass
Cut out the glass along the traced line
Break the cut patterned glass from the sheet of glass
Grind the class to exactly match the pattern line
Clean the glass and continue constructing the item.
Shown here are two ways that this process works out. The first photo on the left above is for a stained glass propagation panel, with each of the shades of glass selected and the pattern traced and numbered in preparation of cutting. The next photo is after steps 3 through 5 have been completed. The pieces are laid in place and now need to be cleaned, then foiled, soldered, cleaned again and polished.
This photo is for a fused glass spoon rest. Here, from left to right, is the pattern, the glass with the pattern traced on it and rough cut. The next image with the clear and the green shows when the glass has been ground and cleaned. After cleaning, the glass parts can be assembled and placed in the kiln. The resulting spoon rest is shown in the right corner of the photo.
